Limited Hours In The Day

I’m not sure why I realized this fact now, but man, it sucks to realize it.

There are so many things I want to learn in web dev, and as I go into the depths of the “NoSQL” world, I realize that I really am not going to be able to learn everything there is to know about even one type of these newfangled database systems.

The day is still young. Can’t let this realization stop me from getting more done.

Just 5 lbs more on the bar today. Just one more hour today. Just one more commit today. Today.

15.5 GB -> 11.18 GB

And so the digital media library continues to shrink, of course, with the help of yet more digital silos.

Not even touching the subject of the MP3 codec itself, I wonder if all this trouble is worth it if the cloud shuts down and all I have left are my local devices.

Heck, what happens if there is a nuclear apocalypse tomorrow? How will I find my tunes?!

Hmm, too much spring cleaning today. Back to MongoDB.

And even more data removal. Huzzah.

The Lovely Tangents

Now I realize why I’ve always had a feed reader project in the back of my mind.

One, because it’s something I use every single day.

But a much more self-mutilating reason? It creates tangents.

The wonderful world of shiny toys and goodies, ranging from the daily must-read posts to the thoughtful, world shattering essay articles that gets published once a month.

The self-defeating cycle is that these goodies, no matter how awesome they are, keep preventing me from actually making headway on this project of mine.

Here’s a free example: Dwarf Fortress. How I visited this site, I don’t actually remember. I do remember hearing about it many times since I turned to indie games, but… it’s time to close this tab out.

Oh hey, it’s an article on Unmoved Mover on Wikipedia. Totally came to this page via listening to the awesome talk that Chris Hecker gave at Berkeley I was thinking about going to. Close that.

Oh hai, Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. I should be reading you, too. Save it for later.

Oh good god, the post on Xsplit I’ve been trying to write for a couple days since switch over from the accursed Flash Media Live Encoder bullcrap.

Ah, now back to my Redis tab. I am at peace again.

Tags vs Categories

Doing some spring cleaning on the blog, shuffling posts and plugins and what not.

And so, I finally revisit the “Web 2.0″ question of tagging vs categorizing.

Categories are just weighted tags. This is precisely what Tumblr has been doing, and I guess Twitter to a certain extent (except that tweets don’t have a separate metadata field).

And so, time to throw down and fix this mess somehow.

GalaxyTab 8.9 and 10.1

Still nowhere close to the responsiveness of the iOS, and I’m comparing it to the first gen iPad. I still haven’t touched the 2nd iPad.

I no longer buy Apple devices. I buy backlit rectangles that run GoodReader, AirVideo, Garageband, Tabtoolkit, and Safari. And run them well, the iPad does… And I’m assuming iPad 2 will run them even better.

So This SC2 Thing

I had to say it.

5th in North America. 10th in the World. In 2v2 Diamond.

This cursed league lock couldn’t have come at a worst time.

I guess all I can hope for is top 8 for both 1v1 and 2v2.

SC2 and Rails, followed by lifting and music. This is all I do. And it’s awesome.

And We’re Back

These comment plugins have really screwed up the wp-admin side of things, and the longer I held off on trying to fix it (which required me to just delete the plugin folder) the longer it took me to get back to this blogging thing.

Screw the commenting systems, let’s go old school and do it like we used to in the 90s.

Wow, I’m old.
