Google v. Yahoo

Question of the Week: Buy Google or Yahoo?

I haven’t really thought about Yahoo as much as I’ve had in the past couple of days.

Google and Yahoo… to normal people, they might just seem like #1 and #2 in the world of online search (there’s a #3? who’s that? ahem). But really, I see that comparing the two companies as a whole is almost like comparing apples to oranges. The commonality that people misunderstand is “search”. But man, there’s so much more!

Both companies are trying to grow. Aggressively. Mind you, Google will be going after Microsoft Office’s market (PowerPoint, anyone?), no matter what Mr. Schmidt is saying at the Web 2.0 Expo (seriously, I only typed “2.0″ cuz it’s name of the conference).

“I don’t think we compete with them. We’re not as fully functional as MS Office — we’re more in line with how people use the web than how they use the desktop.”

I’m not sure how I’ll be using this presentation feature, seeing how I don’t normally create PowerPoints on a day to day basis… but I use Google all the time. The default search engine I use in Firefox is still Google (see how I didn’t say “I google all the time”? Dodged a bullet on that one). I use Gmail for all my email needs. I use Google Reader for my feeds. I also use Google docs, for budgeting and reporting hours for work. I even use Google chat from time to time.

But really, this is only because I haven’t had a reason to try something new. The funny thing is… Yahoo has already been a part of my world… for quite a while, now. While I haven’t really ever used Yahoo search (except to settle a little spat between two friends, Alex and Raj… pertaining to who is really “L Dopa Da Dopsta”..), Yahoo has Del.icio.us and Flickr… two companies very dear to my entrepreneurial heart.

Sadly… Yahoo took a beating on the markets today. Thank goodness I haven’t bought any of their stock. Yet…

What was the point of that? I don’t know. I just needed to relieve some Google/Yahoo steam.

I think this post borders on brain dump… Meh.

Technorati 750K

Whoo hoo! Broke it! Huzzah!

Alas… Google ranking has fallen again to 3 (2 for yahoo). I think joshkim.com is suffering from some spam bot attacks… but we won’t go into that.

Just wanted to share. Now go back to the rest of your day.

Another Example of How the Channel is Devaluing Content

I really want to read it. I really do. But after reading about 10% of the post, I realized the CSS to this post was atrocious. What is the deal with horizontal spacing? What is the deal with the width of the column on this heavy text post?

After disabling the CSS, enlarging the fonts and shifting the window to make the text column a little bit smaller, I still realized that… something’s very wrong with the spacing of words. I thought “acycletothe” was a word I never heard of before.

Dang it. There’s another book/essay experience ruined. Blah.

Couple More Things About Google Reader

A few more things about Google Reader.

Shortcut Keys: Space and Shift+Space

I think the best way to use Google reader is to use space and shift+space to go through stories.

I thought that the space button went through one post each at the time, but I found out that it either does one post at a time OR if the post is longer than a screen’s height, then the behavior of the space key changes to a “page down”. It’s ingenious. I can go through all my feeds with one hand… kinda… which leads me to my next point.

Need a Shortcut Key for: Opening up Links

Currently, I’m having to command+click a title of a story to open up in a tab. There needs to be another key that opens up the story I’ve selected in a target=”_new” window.

I tried the enter key but all that the enter key does is open up the story in “list view”, and it does nothing in “expanded view”. Blah.

Another Feature Request: Sort Options

I like to read my posts backwards than how Google has set it up. I like to read the posts that were posted earlier than those posted later. I’d much rather go directly to the post: I don’t want to hear some garbage summary on the original post. (I love posts that add thoughtful and meaningful content to the original post… but that rarely happens in this digg world.)

So going back to the first point: I have to use shift+space rather than space to scroll through my stories… Kinda clunky, but it works.

Overall: Satisfied

It’s quick. It’s painless, to a certain extent. It’s not as clunky as Vienna

Plus, it’s a web application. Half-minus, it’s Google. (Google is neither on my list of companies I love nor on my list of companies I hate…)

Wow… WoW?

I swear. Sometimes, writing on this blog turns out to be something like leveling in World of Warcraft: I can’t stop it. I gotta level up just once more or turn in one more quest.

Google: Now Enriched with More FedEx

Yet another reason why Google continues to amaze and scare me.

I bought a Logitech Optical Marble Mouse (USB/PS2) recently (a review to follow shortly).

I accidentally copied and pasted my tracking number to the actual google search field (I think I got antsy because FedEx kept on screwing up… more on this later), and look:

Google Tracks?

Oh, and look… Now, if I check the email through GMail, it checks the tracking numbers for me!

Nice little features that makes me love Google more… but nice little features that makes me wonder how far they’re willing to go…
