Why I Hate Text Messages

Finally, someone put it into words.

The True Cost of SMS Messages

via my ISP: $1 via SMS: $61,356,851.20

Lovely. So think twice before you send out that text. I’m happy I have a lovely 200 text cushion before I have to start paying anything, and I tend to refrain from using if at all possible.

This really isn’t a problem with the users: this is largely a case with the big companies. It shouldn’t have to be this way… I shouldn’t have to pay extra to get the same data, when it costs the phone companies exactly the same. Or at least, very little… I’m sure the actual traffic of text messages against phone calls are nothing, and yet, they’re probably making money hand over fist on texts.

I hate you, big companies that don’t look out for their customers. Jerks.

Cleaning Up My Computer: Text Files

Currently, I’m trying to furiously empty my desktop.

I use my desktop as my work queue… I have random source code of possible projects, essays that I want to read, applications that I want to install… I like that I have everything I need to work available on the flick of a wrist (upper right hand is hot cornered to expose: desktop).

I clean it out from time to time, but nevertheless, I really don’t like having too many things clutter up the desktop. But moving everything I had and shoving it into a folder doesn’t fix the problem: I want to have things organized and placed into neat little folders (or freaking tagged… but OS X isn’t there… YET. Come on, 10.5… do it!). I let myself have one column of icons of “stuff”… but that ends up turning into two, three columns of AIEEEE!

‘Tis the weekend. Might as well clean up things. But as I’m cleaning, I’m finding out that my organization scheme isn’t as clean as it can be: I have unnecessary file types.

OmniOutliner was the application of choice for typing up outlines of lectures and readings. Now, I’m finding that the same functionality can be found in TextMate. (I just need to get used to the new method of doing things. Instead of tab or shift+tab, I just need to command+brackets) Since TextMate is blaring fast at opening up files (also helps that I have it open all the time), I’m going to start have to find a script that changes all my .ooutliner files to pure text files.

I used the Apple native text editor TextEdit for some time before that. I use it still to open up .doc files without having to launch open my NeoOffice. But still… I want all the extension-less files to have the little purple gear icon instead of a blank sheet of paper. I guess I’ll look into this as well in the next couple of days.

I guess TextMate is slowly taking over my life. Just like Quicksilver has. I’m just thankful quicksilver is free. I better start saving for the next version of Textmate.

Thank you, Alex, for making my life more… interesting, for a lack of a better word. Without a proper license to TextMate, I wouldn’t have the joy of finding out the amazing things I can do with it.
